PROJECT SCOPE: Corella River Bridge Stress Bar Replacement

The Corella River Bridge is approximately 40 years old and subjected to seasonal flooding. A structural audit by Main Roads determined that strengthening work was required to ensure the ongoing integrity of the bridge and the safety of heavy traffic servicing the mines and communities North of Cloncurry.

CASA’s challenge was to remove 48 x exiting bars (7.5 metres long) from grouted ducts without over-stressing or creating cracks in the surrounding concrete structure. Following de-tensioning using a combination of hydraulic jacking and intermittent/controlled jack-hammering, CASA personnel had only 24 hours to replace new bars and re-stress to the specified tension.

Working from EWPs, only one bar from each of the 12 bays could be removed at a time, requiring careful programming and coordination on-site. Old ducts were core-drilled and flushed, taking care with environmental considerations. New bars were grouted using Main-Roads approved products.
